Range: how many kilometers can you ride your bike with a full battery?
When you choose an (*A) electric bike only one thing is important: enjoy it as long as possible. And you do that by choosing a range that suits you. Because although an e-bike with the largest range is often very convenient, it is not always necessary. It is good to think about what you will use your electric bike for. In this article we would like to help you make the right choice.
Watt-hours and battery capacity
The number of kilometers you can cover with a full battery is called the range. This range depends on several factors but is mainly calculated on the basis of the total battery capacity. This battery capacity is expressed in watt-hours (Wh).
A watt-hour is a unit in which energy is measured. For example, do you have an e-bike with a battery capacity of 500 Wh? This means that the battery can supply 500 watts of energy in one hour, or 100 watts for five hours. The higher the number of watt-hours of the battery, the greater the capacity and the more kilometers you can ride a bike with a fully charged battery..
How many kilometers can you ride a bike with a full battery?
The range depends on a multitude of factors. Nevertheless, to give you an idea of the range you can expect from our e-bikes, we have made an overview based on the capacity in Wh.
In tube battery
24.5 Ah (882Wh) ~ 120 – 220 km
22.4 Ah (806Wh) ~ 110 – 200 km
18.2Ah (655Wh) ~ 100 – 170 km
17.4 Ah (628Wh) ~ 100 – 160 km
14.0 Ah (500Wh) ~ 80 – 120 km
Rear carrier battery
17.4 Ah (628Wh) ~ 100 – 160 km
15.6 Ah (562Wh) ~ 90 – 140 km
13.0 Ah (468Wh) ~ 70 – 120 km
10.4 Ah (374Wh) ~ 60 – 90 km
How to achieve the greatest range possible?
In general, our e-bikes contains five supporting settings. When you use the highest level, the motor will do most of the work while riding your e-bike. You do not have to make much effort yourself. A disadvantage, however, is that the battery runs out of power faster than when you use a lower level of support. As a result, you will have to (*B) recharge your battery more often. So in the end it comes down to the question: do you pedal yourself or do you let the motor do the work?
Choose the right gear
The torque sensors of our (*C) mid-motor e-bikes ensure that you receive more support when you 'push' harder on the pedals. So when you use a heavy gear, the motor will also consume more energy.
We therefore recommend that you cycle in a comfortable gear. An optimal acceleration ensures that you rotate the pedals about 50 times per minute. Furthermore, it is a good idea to begin pedaling from a standstill in the lightest gear, because this puts as little load on the engine as possible.
Limit your luggage
Weight affects the distance you can travel as well. In fact, as the weight increases, the range will decrease. Here we mean both the weight of the cyclist and the luggage you carry. So, are you carrying a heavier load? If you are, take a smaller range into account and make sure your battery is fully charged.
Ensure a proper tire pressure
A tip from our experts is to check tire pressure preferably every month. This is because a low tire pressure causes your e-bike to consume more energy, reducing its range. The ideal tire pressure for our e-bikes is around 4.5 bar.
External factors affecting range
In addition to the things you have control over, there are also outside influences. The main external factors that affect your range are wind force, temperature and the type of road surface you ride your bike on.
Wind
You know the drill: plodding to move forward despite a strong headwind. And because not only you but also the motor has to deliver more energy in a headwind, the range will decrease. But while our e-bikes are happy to give you a boost, it also causes your battery to run down faster.
Temperature
A Lithium-Ion battery performs best at temperatures between 20° and 25° Celsius. At warmer or colder temperatures, the range gradually decreases. This is especially noticeable in the cold winter months. At a temperature of 10° Celsius, your battery functions less efficiently and the range will decrease by about 10%. When the temperature drops below freezing, this can even decrease by 30%.
Road surface
In addition, the type of road surface you cycle on is also important. Are you riding a bike on an unpaved road surface or in a hilly area? The bike will demand a bit more energy than on a smooth and paved road surface. Again, this ultimately reduces the range.
Still in doubt? Then choose the largest battery capacity!
Still hesitating between the different battery capacities? In that case we always recommend choosing the largest variant. This is because it is very common for the battery to lose capacity due to wear and in certain weather conditions. To make choosing the right e-bike easier, you can already think about the placement of the battery: (*D) in tube or at the rear carrier.
Range: question and answer
What does range mean?
The range of a pedelec indicates how many miles you can travel with a fully charged battery. The total distance you can travel depends on the total battery capacity, age of the battery and various external factors, among other things.
How far can I ride a bike with a full battery?
It is currently not possible to accurately calculate your range. This is because the total number of miles to be traveled varies by weather conditions, type of road surfaces, and other variables. However, we can give you an indication of the number of kilometers you can travel:
In tube battery
17.4 Ah (628Wh) ~ 100 – 160km
14.0 Ah (500Wh) ~ 80 – 120km
Rear carrier battery
17.4 Ah (628Wh) ~ 100 – 160km
15.6 Ah (562Wh) ~ 90 – 140km
13.0 Ah (468Wh) ~ 70 – 120km
10.4 Ah (374Wh) ~ 60 – 90km
Which e-bike has the largest range?
Currently, the (*E) 727M and (*F) 727TM have the greatest range within our collection. Both e-bikes have a battery in the frame and are available with a 500Wh battery or 630Wh battery.
